Introduction

Chianti Montalbano Rosé DOCG is the rosé typology of Chianti DOCG, produced within the designated Montalbano wine subzone in Tuscany. It differs from the traditional red version of Chianti Montalbano DOCG through specific requirements concerning its grape composition, winemaking, and organoleptic characteristics, resulting in a lighter and fresher style of wine.

Description of Chianti Montalbano Rosé DOCG

Chianti Montalbano Rosé DOCG has a pale pink colour, with its precise hue varying according to the grape variety or varieties used in winemaking. Its aroma is delicate and distinctly fruity, reflecting the primary aromas of the grapes employed. On the palate, it is dry, fresh, and pleasant, with a lighter and more refreshing character than the traditional red Chianti Montalbano DOCG.

Production method for Chianti Montalbano Rosé DOCG

The production of Chianti Montalbano Rosé DOCG follows the requirements established for the Montalbano subzone, with specific provisions for the rosé typology. Sangiovese must account for at least 60% of the grape composition, while the remaining percentage may be made up of other authorised white and red grape varieties, up to a total of 100%. The permitted varieties may include Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Vermentino, Trebbiano Toscano, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah, among other authorised grapes.

A further distinction concerns the traditional “Governo all’uso Toscano” technique, which is not permitted for this wine. This method, permitted for other Chianti DOCG, involves a controlled secondary fermentation of the newly drawn-off wine through the addition of partially dried grapes. Its exclusion for the rosé typology helps preserve the wine’s characteristic freshness and delicate aromatic profile.

Unless otherwise specified, the production method for this wine is identical to the one described on the Chianti DOCG page.
