Introduction

The Myrtales constitute an order of flowering plants positioned within the malvid clade of the broader rosid lineage among dicotyledons. Members of this order typically display opposite leaf arrangement, often accompanied by short stipules and prominent venation patterns. Their reproductive structures commonly include flowers with clavate (club-shaped) petals, a feature that contributes to their botanical identification.

Classification of Myrtales

This order is in turn divided into families. Among these we find:

  • Combretaceae (chebula myrobalan, Indian almonds)
  • Lythraceae (banaba, pomegranates)
  • Melastomataceae (miconia, tibouchina)
  • Myrtaceae (cloves, guava, pitanga)
  • Onagraceae (common evening primrose, fuchsia)
