The haploid stage in the plant life cycle that produces gametes (sperm and egg cells). In seed plants, the male gametophyte is found inside pollen grains, while the female gametophyte develops within the ovule. It is responsible for sexual reproduction by generating the reproductive cells needed for fertilization.
